Kumtag Desert Park Tips

Kumtag Desert is an exciting attraction for those who have never been to deserts before!

Bring sunglasses, sunblock and hat to protect yourself from the sun. Dress windproof wear.

Don’t forget to prepare drinking water too. Do prepare some food and snacks since there aren’t much to eat inside.

Time to go

The best time to go to Kumtag Desert is May(before May 7 would be even better) and Oct. April would be nice too but there is a risk of sandstorm or dust storm. If you are going from June to Sept, it would be easier to go up the sand hills before 12:00 noon or after 20:00 at night.

Inner Transport

You could hop up on the sightseeing cart if you have children or elderlies who can’t walk much, otherwise it will take 20 minutes walk for normal people to get to the sightseeing cart stop spot, walking is recommended as it gives you a chance to explore the place by your own and take pictures.

The inner transport sightseeing car within the park will stop at around 20:00 in summer. Check the sunset time if you want to see desert sunset. In some months eg May, the sunset is at around 21:00 and you may have to walk if you would like to see the sunset.

Walking Directions

There are two main paths for exploring the desert. One walking path starts from the desert park to a little village called Langan Village 栏杆乡, it is around 10km and you can complete it within a day.

Another trekking path is going from the park through southwest of the desert to Dikan’ercun (Dikan’er village 迪坎尔村), this trek is 40km and is described as South North Great Passing 南北大穿越. Desert path is not easy to trek on foot, so it will cost 3 days of trekking. Desert trekking is quite risky, if you do not have desert trekking experience, do not go on your own and preferably, hire a guide and prepare desert survival kit and gears to go with you.

Sand Skating or skimboarding, camel riding, oasis cruise, desert sand motoring are available in the park as separate service on separate cost. You can bring your own board to skim from top of the sand hills. Desert motoring costs around ¥100 CNY.

You could also camp around the desert if it is not windy, if it is windy then you could only camp downhill. They have camp tent to rent on site or you can bring your own tent. There might be bonfire on Saturday nights.
